Twenty
years ago, going to a European spa (if you could find one) usually
meant draconian diets, toe-curlingly painful Swedish massages and dips
in ill-managed hot springs. More recently, when spa resorts started
popping up everywhere, they invariably seemed to be full of women with
more money than sense. Who would voluntarily spend over €100 to be
covered in mud and wrapped in cling film? However, those women knew
what they were up to. Pampering is no longer just a wealthy woman's way
of passing the time: we’ve all realized that a long weekend spent at a
spa is an ideal way to switch off. And we're spoilt for choice now -
there is every sort of retreat imaginable and at last spas have lost
their gender bias: spas which cater for men are big business; and spas
in hotels with added activities and indulgences are even more
desirable. Luxury spas are now targeting the male market, with a whole
range of treatments devised specifically for men. Here you can find a
list of the most prestigious spas around the world.

Taha'a - Tautau
From
Raiatea (reachable from Tahiti with a flight of 45 minutes) a motorboat
could take you in half hour on the private island of Tautau where the
Taha'a is located, the only Relais & Chàteaux of the archipelago. Main
character of the structure is the Manea Spa, close to the small inner
lake and the tropical garden. All the treatments follow the ancient
Polynesian wisdom and take advantage of the virtues of the local
ingredients. The main ingredient is the vanilla, that arrives from the
near island of Taha'a, a great producer in the country. One can start
with a delicate treatment, Hoho'a Vanirà, coupled with one hair mask,
Rouru Vanirà, in which the vanilla is stirred with the mono'i butter.
Try then the Mono'i' Vanirà, a perfumed massage of 50 or 80 minutes, on
the terrace of yours pilotis, the bungalow on stilt house, or in the
middle of the lagoon. You can also cradle yourself with a Mahana Manea,
a gommage with coconut pulp, coupled with a special mono'i, that
prepares the skin for a sunbath. If the problem is, on the contrary,
right to have exaggerated with the sun, what you need is the Vea Manea,
a treatment made of oil of tamanu and sandal. Still not enough? Who is
ready to be spoilt should try the Poe Manea, a cure of half a day that
combines the most exclusive proposals of the spa: a choice of natural
gommage, a pulp of hydrating fruit and mineralizing weeds mask, a
complete massage, a facial and a pause in the Jacuzzi on the lake
shores.
